Mayor: Voorhees promotes ‘Live Where You Work’

Voorhees Township’s population of approximately 31,000 residents increases on a daily basis when commuters and shoppers visit our community every day. We will continue to try to convert those commuters into Voorhees residents.

The Township Committee voted in 2009 to participate in the state sponsored Live Where You Work program, which offers financial incentives to workers who buy homes in the municipalities where they work.

Over 40 other communities, including Cherry Hill and Evesham, have also joined the program. Live Where You Work offers low-interest mortgage rates, flexible loan application reviews and help with down payments and closing costs to qualified buyers.

In order to qualify, a person must be a first-time homebuyer who works but does not presently live in Voorhees. Income guidelines posted by the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Financing Agency (HMFA), which administers the program, suggest that a household of one or two people can earn no more than $70,560 a year if the family wants to qualify. Households of three of more can earn no more than $81,144 annually.

Incentives include down-payment and closing-cost assistance equal to as much as 5 % of the total mortgage amount.

Voorhees is promoting the program through our township website, www.voorheesnj.com, printed literature, outreach to major employers, and the local media. In addition information can be obtained at the State website www.livewhereyouwork.nj.gov or you can call 1–800-NJHOUSE

The program should help others learn what our residents already know, that Voorhees is “in the center of everything…and away from it all.”
