Haddonfield wrestlers, their parents, siblings, coaches, the Wrestling Booster Club, alumni and fans have pooled energy and resources so the town’s wrestlers have a new larger space this season to go with their new head coach.
There has only ever been one practice facility for youth, middle school and high school wrestlers in town. In recent years, these growing programs have totalled well over 125 boys. Even with staggered practice times, the programs needed much more space. And it’s finally here. Formerly the high school’s woodworking room, the newly-renovated facility is more than double the size of the old one. Wall mats were just installed; the booster club is still raising money for floor mats, chin up bars and a sound system among other items.
Last year’s varsity team finished the season with a record of 28–2. They were Colonial Conference Liberty Division Champs, District 28 Champs, ranked first in Region Seven and eighth in the state. A season highlight was their win over Paulsboro — the first time Paulsboro’s team had lost at home in the past 40 years. The first home match of the season will be held on Monday, Dec. 19 versus Audubon in the A Gym.
The new head wrestling coach is former HMHS Varsity Assistant Coach, Billy Heverly. He was a Camden Catholic assistant coach and varsity wrestler where he was a four time district champion, four time region finalist, two time region champ, and two time New Jersey state runner-up. After graduation, Heverly earned four varsity letters wrestling for Drexel University.
