Walking for a cure

Last month, more than 5,000 walkers representing local corporations, families, schools, and other organizations participated in the South Jersey Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation annual Walk to Cure Diabetes at the Waterfront at Campbell’s Field. The fundraising goal of the Cherry Hill-based chapter is to realize more than one million dollars for research to find better treatments and a cure for diabetes and its complications. This year’s walk was led by Walk Chairs Donna Bell and Tony Foster and a committee of dedicated JDRF volunteers.

“It’s great to be partnering with JDRF and working together on such an important goal — promoting awareness of type 1 diabetes and raising funds to advance research,” said Bill Kaiser of Gallagher Benefit Services, this year’s South Jersey Corporate Chair.”

In addition to wide-spread corporate support, entire families from kids to grandparents take part in the fundraising efforts of the Walk to Cure Diabetes — many affected, but even those who are not among the 14 million Americans with a personal connection to type-1 diabetes.

This year’s Walk theme was ‘Cure Under Construction.’ As part of the theme, children had the opportunity to paint a floor tile representing their team, which was then constructed as part of a wall. Route Marshalls directing walkers wore hardhats and reflective vests. Entertainment such as Zumba, face-painting, balloon art, and arts-and-crafts for kids were available, and food and drink were provided.
