Yacht club offers free boating camp for Camden County youth

If your child has a dream of learning to sail, canoe, and kayak, is between the ages of 9 and 16 and a Camden County resident, he or she may be eligible for a free one-week boating camp from August 15 to 19 at Cooper River Yacht Club (CRYC) in Collingswood.

“Students will learn to sail and paddle and be given an overview about boating laws, boating safety, and rescue techniques as well as employment in the boating industry, and proper stewardship of the river environment,” Marcie Ridenour, program coordinator, said.

Life jackets, books, and lunches are provided for all youth attending the camp.

Students who receive assistance to pay for school lunches or are enrolled in Medicaid or NJ FamilyCare are encouraged to apply. The application consists of completing a 50-yard swimming test at a local swimming pool as well as an interview to gauge the student’s interest, mental and physical preparedness, and willingness to follow the camp code of conduct.

Enrollment is limited to approximately 20 students.

For more information on the boating camp, contact the Cooper River Yacht Club by sending an email to marrid@comcast.net or by calling (215) 703-SAIL. Information is also available at www.cooperriveryc.org, or in person at the club.

This program is supported by a scholarship fund from I BOAT NJ. This fund is intended to support youth from 9 to 16 who are unable to pay for summer sailing programs at the CRYC.
