Schopfer to present research in Minneapolis

Elizabeth Anne Schopfer, a rising junior at the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Psychology with an interest in Special Needs and Autism Research, has been selected to present at SLEEP 2011, the 25th Anniversary Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, LLC (APSS). The conference (www.sleepmeeting.org) will be held June 11 through 15, at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minnesota. The SLEEP meeting attracts the largest audience of sleep specialists in the nation. It is the only five-day meeting in the nation with scientific sessions and an exhibition hall focused solely on sleep medicine and sleep research.

Schopfer had the opportunity to participate in the Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology (CSCN) Research Retreat at the University of Pennsylvania on May 20, 2011. The Division of Sleep Medicine was the first independent Sleep Division established in the United States. Based within the University of Pennsylvania Department of Medicine, the division’s membership reflects the multi-disciplinary nature of sleep medicine at Penn and draws its faculty members from different academic departments and specialties.

Schopfer, Cherry Hill High School West 2009 Class Valedictorian and National Honor Society President, studies as a sleep research assistant under Dr. Michael Grandner (www.michaelgrandner.com) at the Center for Sleep and Respiratory Neurobiology at the University of Pennsylvania Sleep Center.

Schopfer, a Penn honor student, serves as the Research Chair of Penn Speaks for Autism, Chaplain and Hospitality Chair of the New Spirit of Penn Gospel Choir, Worship Team bassist of Penn Students for Christ, in addition to, her volunteer work for the Kite and Key Society, the Ronald McDonald House, and the Penn Equestrian Team.

Schopfer received the prestigious Mulroney Scholarship for Autism and Education in 2010 where, as a rising sophomore, she was accepted by the University Of Pennsylvania Graduate School Of Education to attend a summer graduate school course study in autism. In addition, she had the opportunity to participate in the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR) 2010 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Schopfer also served as a Big Break 2011 Campus Crusade for Christ Missionary in Panama City, Florida. She can be reached at Schopfer@sas.upenn.edu.
