Election results final, Dortch the winner

By ROBERT LINNEHAN

Although unofficial, the Voorhees Public School District is declaring that all of the absentee ballots and mail-in ballots have been accounted for with the April 27 school board elections. Board of education candidate Matthew Dortch was clinging to a nine vote lead prior to 16 mail-in ballots being counted.

District representative Irene Afek said the Dortch was ultimately declared the winner over incumbent candidate Richard Wojdon, winning by a mere seven votes. Dortch ended the election with 1,404, while Wojdon finished with 1,397.

The budget passing was never in doubt and had been declared “approved” the night of the election.

“The approval of the K-8 school budget was a victory for the Voorhees community. There were many individuals, groups and organizations who were instrumental in promoting and passing this budget. We are very grateful for these efforts,” Afek said. “As we move forward, we will continue to balance fiscal responsibility while enhancing the quality of our education programs and facilities. There is much to be proud of in the Voorhees Township Public Schools and this was demonstrated by the support of the community.”
