A 10-year-old speaks out about the school budget

One night, I was doing my homework, and I was on the last problem. I finally finished, so I’m like, “Yes!” I go downstairs, and I see my mom working on the computer. She says, “If the budget doesn’t pass, then Voorhees schools will lose librarians, school counselors, art, and enrichment teachers.”

I was furious! I only told my mom that I was worried, but I was really furious! So I started texting my friends. The next day at school, my friends started telling everyone about this, and so did I. I was telling everyone the exact same thing my mom told me. I added it would also affect our education, AND our future. So they were like “O.M.G” or “Darn” or “What the heck! Why would they do that?” and I said “Only if the budget doesn’t pass, so there’s still hope.”

I could tell they were relieved by this, because they gave a big sigh of relief. A couple of days later, the way I thought about it, it made me start writing this. It is WRONG to cut our education, because I don’t think people realize that WE are the next generation, and I think we need to be educated to take on
the hard things (jobs) in the real world. I love it when I see that my friends are learning so much, like I do, but that could be made harder for all of us with a less amount of teachers.

This is my way of trying to get the message out, and I hope that you will realize this message, just like I did. For all of those people out there, who already experienced school, worry free, try to make our school worry free, by voting for the budget to pass.

Alex A., a 10-year-old student in the Voorhees school district.
