Growing church needs a new parking lot

The Christian Science Church of Haddonfield is an active part of the community, opening our doors to first night and council of churches activities. We are proud of our place in Haddonfield’s historic district and of what we contribute to its aesthetic, historical and architectural aspects.

The church owns a small parcel of land on Sylvan Lake Avenue across from Haddonfield Memorial High School. The church is seeking to convert this space into a parking area for 18 cars in conjunction with creating handicapped access to the church. This space will be totally concealed from Sylvan Lake Avenue by attractive fencing and tightly planted laurel and holly bushes, five feet and four feet high respectively at the time of planting. The handicap ramp will be shielded by yews. The parking area will not be visible from Kings Highway.

The need for this space is clear for two reasons:

• Increased church attendance at our Sunday morning and Wednesday evening services.

• Increased usage of the street parking spaces due to changed conditions at the high school. Increasing numbers of students with cars, many more events scheduled on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings, including rentals to outside groups.

Our church was built in 1932. Zoning laws in Haddonfield now require churches to have parking lots and handicap access. We have made every effort to plan an attractive way to abide by the spirit of the law and to provide our attendees with the same parking and accessibility features other churches on Kings Highway already have.

The church has always been open to dialogue with the community and is more than happy to share our plans with any interested party. We encourage anyone interested in the parking lot to look at the drawings found on our church Web site at cshaddonfield.org.
