Children enrolled in the Friends Enrichment Program for underprivileged Moorestown children, know firsthand about the problems that arise when parents get laid off or are at risk of getting laid off, or earn barely enough to provide their families with essentials.
But these children are also aware that there are thousands of people in South Jersey who are worse off than their families, people who go hungry every day.
In October, in their weekly FEP program of activities, children learned that 36,000 children in South Jersey often find themselves hungry. They decided that FEP should do something to combat hunger.
Tomorrow, FEP will host an Empty Bowl Dinner in the Moorestown Friends Meeting House. The event is open to the public. Admission is free, however, freewill donations will be gratefully accepted. Half of the proceeds will go to the Food Bank of South Jersey and the other half will be reserved for an FEP scholarship fund and will help pay for summer camp scholarships, art classes, sports clinics, or music lessons for recipients.
Dinner will start at 5 p.m. with the first seating and end at 7 p.m. It will feature freshly baked breads and a variety of soups served in handmade ceramic bowls. Many of the bowls have been produced by FEP children and young members of Moorestown Friends Meeting at a pottery workshop held in January and led by ceramic artist and Moorestown Friends School art teacher David Gamber. The bowls will be displayed and sold at the dinner.
