Smooth sailing for Tanner Street

By ROBERT LINNEHAN

For anyone who has driven down Tanner Street in the previous few months, this bit of news will come as a relief. The commissioners officially approved a measure to seek bids from construction companies to complete the longtime road reconstruction project.

Commissioner Jeff Kasko said the work will most likely be completed sometime during the spring. It depends on when the bids are received and if they come in under budget, he said.

This is the final step of the massive road reconstruction project that started late last summer. The first phase of the project was a complete reconstruction of the intersection at Tanner Street, Euclid Avenue, and Haddon Avenue.

The project was originally scheduled to begin construction in 2009, but was delayed because the Borough applied for stimulus funding. Previously, McCullough said the Borough was denied in the first round of applications and could try again for the second round, but did not want to delay the project even further.

In years past when sewer lines were installed underneath Tanner Street they were at times installed directly through already existing storm water pipes. If any of these sewer pipes were ever to break the waste could be dumped into the Borough’s storm water system, which is why they needed to be replaced.

During construction the road was closed during the day and then open to motorists at night.

Businesses along the street remained open during the entire process. Several owners along the street said the construction was noisy, dusty, and inconvenient for business.

This is the final phase of the massive road project.
