Possible flat tax levy to be discussed tonight

By ROBERT LINNEHAN

A specially scheduled board of education meeting will be held tonight at the DeMasi Middle School cafeteria at 7:30 p.m. to discuss and pass the preliminary Evesham K-8 2011–2012 school district budget.

Last week the board met for its regularly scheduled meeting and discussed the district receiving an increase of $718,000 in state aid. Because of the increase in aid, both Superintendent John Scavelli and BOE President Lisa Mansfield said the extra funding could bridge the budget gap and make a flat tax levy possible for 2011–2012.

“The board was very encouraged by the news this week from Trenton with regard to the increase in state aid. Due to this positive news, it is a real possibility for the district to have a zero increase,” she said. “ The board will be having discussion over the course of the week, and at our meeting on March 3, at which time we will adopt a tentative budget.”

The state aid totals will jump to $12,230,498 for the K-8 district.
