The Spot needs some new advisors

By ROBERT LINNEHAN

The local Voorhees teen center is looking for energetic and enthusiastic teenagers to become new representatives for the organization. The Spot needs new members for its teen advisory board to help with programming and to help guide the community organization with new ideas.

The Spot — the official name of the Teen Center — opened in January 2009 after the Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust donated 2,200 square feet of space and worked with many of its contractors to make the project possible. The center serves students from Eastern Regional High School and Voorhees Middle School and allows them come together to study, socialize and attend special functions. The Spot features wellness workshops, free tutoring, college seminars and community service events.

The Spot is located on the second floor of the Town Center and is directly outside of Boscov’s department store.

Tony Gottlob, the coordinator for The Spot, said there are already a number of dedicated and bright teenagers on the board, but the youth organization is always looking for new members.

Since its grand opening in 2009, Gottlob said The Spot has been a welcome addition to the township and popular among local teens looking to get involved in their community.

“Teens who join our advisory board are going to work on activities for our organization. We want to devise more special programming, a winter fashion show, and we also thought it would be nice for the seniors to have a panel and come in and told to the lower classmates about what they need to do to prepare themselves for college,” she said.

The teen advisory board will also discuss how to improve The Spot and make it more accessible for local teenagers. Improvements to the actual space are also being discussed, Gottlob said.

“The Spot is a really neat place. The kids have told us they want to see more color and have it be more intimate. PREIT had it built out for us and Voorhees Township funded us as well. They’ve been so great for all that they’ve done. We’re trying to maintain the funding we have and have some fundraisers in the future to support us even more,” she said.

Interested teens can visit The Spot Web site at Thespotteencenter.org to apply for a position on the teen advisory board.
