By AUBRIE GEORGE | The Moorestown Sun
Spring has begun, bringing with it nice weather and plenty of opportunities for Moorestown residents to enjoy themselves. Here is a list of township happenings for the rest of the season that give families an excuse to get out of the house and enjoy spring while it lasts.
On May 21 Moorestown children are invited to participate in the Home Run Derby at Jeff Young Park. Both boys and girls are invited to participate in this event — boys will hit baseballs and girls will hit softballs. Points will be issued for all fair balls that are hit. The derby will be open to 7 and 8-year olds at 5:30 p.m., 9 and 10-year olds at 6:15 p.m., and 11 and 12-year-olds at 7 p.m. Each participant must obtain and return a registration form before the day of the event. The rain date for this event is May 26. For more information or to obtain a form visit www.moorestownrec.com.
Moorestown will honor the men and women who committed their lives to serving our country with a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 31 at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park on South Church Street. The annual ceremony is free and open to the public. The event will include speakers, Moorestown Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts, music, and the traditional flag raising, salute and National Anthem. The township will also honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice by placing flowers at the war memorial site that is located at the park as the names are read aloud.
Moorestown gets its very own holiday to celebrate with the Moorestown Business Association’s 34th annual Moorestown Day, scheduled for June 5. This rain or shine event is a Moorestown tradition that includes sidewalk sales by Main Street merchants, more than 100 vendors, and a full day of food, entertainment, theater performances and family fun. Events are scheduled to kick off at 9 a.m. and the fun will continue until 3 p.m. For more information visit www.moorestown.com/mba/events.cfm.
Also on June 5, residents are invited to participate in the 26th annual Scott Coffee Moorestown Rotary 8K run. Held each year in the memory and tradition of Scott Coffee who founded the Moorestown Rotary Run, the race raises money for the Scott Coffee Education Endowment, which provides scholarships for high school students. The event includes an 8k run, a relay, and a one-mile family fun walk or run. All events kick off at The Moorestown Community House at 8:30 a.m. Awards will be given in a variety of categories. The event includes entertainment from a DJ, breakfast for all registrants, T-shirts for pre-registrants and those who register the day of the event while supplies last.
