Residents may be looking at an increase of about 2.5 percent in the school tax rate, as the Board of Education Finance Committee floated several suggestions to district representatives last week. To help bridge a possible $1.4 million deficit, the committee also suggested a reduction of $616,000 in operating and program costs.
A 2.5 increase in the tax rate would see the tax bill of the average assessed home in the borough rise by $174, Business Administrator Andy Hall said.
Coupled with the tax increase would be an overall reduction of $616,000 for the 2010–11 school year, Board Member Dennis Kelleher reported. Within these reductions is the elimination of one elementary school teacher and a $35,000 reduction in the elementary orchestra program.
Operations would decrease by $115,000, the district would outsource its custodial services for a potential savings of $300,000, eliminate a physical education teacher for $50,000, and budget for a $50,000 savings in energy costs, the finance committee member reported.
