Drivers looking to cut an extra few seconds off their commutes should probably think twice from now on — the township was approved for a five-year pilot program to make Route 70 a safer road to drive.

The state Department of Transportation announced Cherry Hill’s approval for the Red Light Running Automated Enforcement pilot program, which will see a traffic camera installed at the intersection of Route 70 and Springdale Road.

Ten municipalities were approved for the pilot program, according to the DOT. Each municipality submitted data about specific locations that “have a demonstrated history of violations and crashes related to red light running that has not been reduced by previous engineering, enforcement and education efforts.”
